PhD Admission (AcSIR), Earth Sciences at NCESS Thiruvananthapuram

About the position

NCESS Thiruvananthapuram invites applications for regular PhD positions in earth, weather and climate science. The degree is awarded by AcSIR in Physical Sciences. The intake is for the January 2027 academic session. There are 5 regular positions with a valid fellowship.

Eligibility

Positions: 5 (UR-4, OBC-1, SC-0, ST-0, EWS-0). One post is reserved for PwBD.

The candidate must have:

1. A postgraduate degree from a recognised university in Sciences (Physics, Applied Physics, Atmospheric Sciences, Meteorology, Oceanography or related subjects, Climate Science, Geophysics with Meteorology, Geology, Earth Sciences, Applied Geology, Geophysics, Applied Geophysics, Applied Geochemistry, Environmental Sciences, Electronics or related subjects, Geoinformatics or related subjects, Chemical Sciences, Mathematical Sciences including Mathematics, Applied Mathematics and Statistics), OR an M.Tech. in Earth, Atmospheric or Oceanic Sciences or technology or related subjects, Geology, Applied Geology, Geophysics, Applied Geophysics or Applied Geochemistry, OR a Master's degree in any branch of Engineering with specialisation in Hydrology, water resources or related subjects.
2. A valid national-level fellowship (from agencies such as CSIR, UGC, DBT, DST, or an equivalent such as INSPIRE or RGNF). Candidates with a provisional fellowship may apply. If it is not approved, they can continue the PhD on a self-sponsored basis, with no financial assistance from the institute.
3. Minimum 55% marks (without rounding off) or equivalent grade for General (UR) and General-EWS. Minimum 50% for OBC (NCL), SC, ST, Third gender and PwD.
4. Physics or Mathematics studied at bachelor's level.

Fellowship / pay

Regular positions are with a valid fellowship from a national funding agency. The notice does not state an amount.
